Obituary for Robert L. Hoard

PEORIA – Robert L. Hoard, 91, of Peoria passed away at 2:05 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2014, at his residence with his wife at his side. Robert was born June 14, 1922, in Thomasville, IL to Edward and Josephine (Smock) Hoard. He married Aldona L. Sterbis on May 14, 1944. She survives. He is also survived by his son, Gregory (Nancy) Hoard of Scottsdale, AZ; two granddaughters, Rachel and Faith; five sisters, Margaret Dorsey of Amherst, OH, Lorretta Cloyed of Fort Meyers, FL, Erma Fedor, Houston, TX, Lou Cummings of Auburn, IL and Marian Marsalgia of Thayer, IL; one brother, Raymond Hoard of Springfield, IL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Josephine Hemberger; and one brother, Chet Hoard. Robert was an Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. He moved to Peoria after being discharged. He and his wife owned and operated Palace Cleaners and Shine Parlor and Spring Street Cleaners for 20 years. Additionally, he worked as a supervisor the Secretary of State Driver’s License Department for several years and for the Illinois Department of Transportation for 23 years. He also owned and remodeled rental houses for many years. Robert was a past president of Sertoma Club and a life member of Amvets Post 64, where he served as past commander, was Board President this past year and was an active member for 6 decades. He was also a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria for many years. Funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21,2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Bill Cordes of Grace Presbyterian Church will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, IL.
