Obituary for Robert Joseph Flaherty

PEORIA – Robert Joseph “Bob” Flaherty, 85, of Peoria, passed away at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Proctor Endowment Home. Robert was born February 13, 1928, in LeMars, IA, to Thomas and Cora F. (Sullivan) Flaherty. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Thomas and Leo; a sister, Margaret Flaherty; and a sister-in-law, Delores Flaherty. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Helen Flaherty of LeMars, IA; long time friend, Marilynn Trinder of Peoria; and many nieces and nephews. He grew up in LeMars, and was a 1946 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946, and served as a Sergeant in the occupation of Japan following World War II. In 1948, he enrolled in Westmar College in LeMars, where he spent three semesters before transferring to the University of Notre Dame. Bob was a great fan of Notre Dame football, and enjoyed returning to the campus for games and reunions. Following graduation, Bob accepted a position in the marketing department of Caterpillar Inc. After assignments in South Carolina and Georgia, he returned to Peoria for the remainder of his career, until his retirement in 1985. Bob was an avid reader. He especially enjoyed history. Gardening was a favorite activity every summer. He also was a volunteer at Sacred Heart Church in Peoria. Robert was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where a funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Msgr. William Watson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the Mass at the church. Burial will be in the Flaherty family plot in Calvary Cemetery in LeMars, IA, on Friday, April 5, 2013, with Father Kevin Richter officiating. American Legion Wasmer Post #241 will conduct military rites. Memorials may be made to the Family Resource Center, 321 Main St., Peoria or St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
