Obituary for Robert J. O'Donnell

Peoria- Robert James O’Donnell, 76, of Peoria passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home with his family at his side.
Bob was born on October 4, 1945, in Peoria to John and Frances (McDevitt) O’Donnell. He married Susan Dentino on August 17, 1968 at St. Mark Catholic Church in Peoria.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Sue, his brothers Max, Steve, and Michael “Mick” O’Donnell, his sisters Sue Lafeber and Maureen Prassas, and one nephew Patrick O’Donnell.
He is survived by his brother Pat and sister Kathy both of Peoria, his children, Philip (Mary) O’Donnell of Peoria, Maureen “Muffy” (James) DeBritz of Bethesda, Maryland, and Katie (Kevin) Wahl of West Peoria. Bob is fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Colleen, Caroline, Patrick, and Kevin O’Donnell and Cecilia, Dominic, Anthony and Christopher DeBritz.
He grew up on the East Bluff and attended St. Bernard Grade School. While at Spalding High School, he met the love of his life, Sue Dentino. Both Bob and Sue were graduates of Bradley University. Bob went to work as a teacher and bus driver at Wilder Waite Grade School before beginning his long career as an insurance salesman.
Describing Bob as an avid fisherman is an understatement. He spent his free time on the water “wetting a line” with his fishing buddies and especially enjoyed quiet hours in the boat with his devoted wife Sue. His nephews, children, and grandchildren all learned to fish on the many fishing outings Bob planned.
He took a keen interest in advising his children in matters big and small, enjoyed cookouts with his extended family, and his innumerable pancake breakfasts are legendary among his grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, and grandfather.
Visitation will be from 9:00 -10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Peoria followed by a Memorial Mass at the Church at 10:30 a.m. with Father Thomas Taylor officiating. Cremation Rites have been accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sophia’s Kitchen, 103 S. Richard Pryor Place, Peoria, IL 61605. The family greatly appreciates the compassionate care Bob received from his caregivers with Shirettes in Home Care and the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.
