Obituary for Robert G. Elger Sr.

PEORIA – Robert G. Elger Sr., 91, of Peoria, passed away at 4:09 a.m., Monday, September 16, 2013, at his residence. Robert was born on August 11, 1922, in Peoria, to Harry and Mary Arnot (Hill) Elger. He married Anna George on August 16, 1947 in Peoria. She passed away on January 4, 2004. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, one grandchild, and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by two daughters, Karen “Kay” (Jim) Buettner and Mary (Peter) Willi both of Peoria; four sons, Harry Elger of Peoria, Robert G. Jr. (Mary Ellen) Elger of Champaign, Steve (Kathy) Elger of Metamora, and Scott (Joyce) Elger of Peoria; one sister, Anna Jean Horn of Morton; grandchildren, Christopher Buettner, Dr. Mark Buettner, Father Matthew Buettner, Elizabeth Dahl, Nathan Elger, Robert G. Elger III, Megan Elger, Anthony Elger, Tyler Willi, Kimberly Hunt, Alexander Elger, Clayton Elger, Breanna Elger, and Olivia Elger; nine great-grandchildren; and his loyal and trusted companion, his white German Shephard, Kayla, whom he loved. Robert was a World War II Army veteran. He worked as a meat cutter at George’s Meat Company and Kroger for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church and a former member of St. Ann Catholic Church, where he was a member for most of his life. He was also a member of the church dartball league, St. Ann’s Men’s Club, and Knights of Columbus, St. Jude Council #4333. Robert lived for his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. His family would like to thank his caregivers, Shira Williams, Kathy VanVoorhis, Elaine Klahn, Debra Alexander, and Debbie Cain, for their loving care. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 19, 2013, at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father Matthew Buettner will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday following the visitation at the mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded following the Mass. Burial of cremains will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.
