Obituary for Robert G. "Bob" Smith

Peoria- Robert G. “Bob” Smith, age 97, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, IL.

Bob was born July 15, 1920, a son of Edward M. and Nina M. (Gares) Smith. He married Martha J. Waldeck, August 18, 1945 at St. Mark Catholic Church in Peoria. She preceded him in death on January 10, 2018.

Survivors include four sons; Bill Smith of Springfield, Jim Smith of Peoria, Jack (Jean) Smith of McHenry, and Jeff (Susie) Smith of Marengo, IL., two daughters; Mary Kay McAllister of Eureka and Sally Barringer of Cypress, TX., 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Mike Smith, one sister, Sr. Rosemary Smith, OP and two son-in laws, Greg McAllister and Michael Barringer.

As a teenager, Bob went down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers in a canoe until the bow of the canoe was split in a storm, ending his adventure. He worked at Boeing Company before proudly serving in the US Marines after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was stationed at Gaum, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. He served as a S/Sgt and was on the third wave landing at Iwo Jima, with the 3rd and 5th Marine Divisions and received a purple heart for his service. He worked as a sales representative for the Behr Manning Norton Co., until his retirement.

Bob was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he and Martha were founding members. He was a founding member and past president of PARC, now known as EPIC. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree and past Faithful Navigator. Bob was involved, for many years, in the Tootsie Roll Drive to benefit the mentally disabled. He was a board member of the Peoria Area Blind People’s Center for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Traveler’s Protection Association.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 AM, Friday, July 13, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church with a visitation one hour prior. Franciscan Friars will officiate. Burial of Ashes will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum.
