Obituary for Richard Szidon

Richard J. Szidon, 83, of Peoria, died on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 4:51 p.m. at his residence. Dick was born May 7, 1929 in Peoria to Jacob and Lorys  Kitchell Szidon; he married Rosemary Johnston on October 20, 1956 in Chillicothe. She survives. Dick was the loving father of Mathew (Jennifer) Szidon of Peoria, Julia (Chris) von Gries of Bettendorf, IA, and Daniel (Michele) Szidon of Milwaukee,WI; loving grandfather to seven grandchildren  Alex von Gries, Olivia von Gries, Max von Gries, Megan Szidon, Abby Szidon, Hope Szidon, and Jacob Szidon. He is also survived by five sister-in-laws Betty Phelps, Joyce Shane, Helen Crooks, Jane Anne Morrissey, and Colleen Szidon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Daniel. He graduated from Bradley University in 1951 with a business degree, and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church and its Men’s Club. Dick was involved in sales all his life with 25 years in television ad sales at WMBD and TCI Cablevision in Peoria. He also spent 20 years working at auto dealerships, last as a partner in Village Buick in Morton. With his extensive sales experience, Dick collected an impressive number of friends, colleagues, and colorful stories all involving nicknames to protect the innocent. He was an avid golfer and member of Mt. Hawley Country Club for 40 years. He had a true passion for golfing and working on golf clubs. During his years of golfing, Dick became an accomplished golfsmith, modifying and assembling hundreds of clubs for his family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 10 a.m. at his church, with Msgr. Jason Gray officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, June 1, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the Rosary at 3:30 p.m., and half hour prior to the Mass on Saturday. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Bradford, IL, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul School. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
