Obituary for Richard J. McKenna

PEORIA – Richard J. McKenna, 88, of Peoria passed away at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Heddington Oaks. Richard was born on November 25, 1925, in Watertown, SD, to Frank and Mae Ida (O’Connor) McKenna. He married Pauline Deis on August 23, 1954, in Onaka, SD. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2008, in Iowa City, IA. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dr. John McKenna; and one sister, Margaret McKenna. He is survived by his daughter, Stacie Dalpiaz of Peoria; his son, James McKenna of Wyoming, IL; five grandchildren, Jake (Kelly) Dalpiaz, Leanne (Andy) Cusack, Matt (Megan Witter) Dalpiaz, Andrew McKenna, and Nathan McKenna; and three great-grandchildren, Pierce Dalpiaz, Macie Dalpiaz, and Calvin Cusack. Richard was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He received his bachelor degree from South Dakota University. He then worked as a supervisor for Caterpillar in Morton for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Order of Alhambra, American Legion Post #2, the Cat Retirees Club, the Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree, and the Knights of Columbus, Spalding Assembly #206, Fourth Degree. Richard was a crossword and jigsaw puzzle master, a Manhattan aficionado, an accomplished grill cook, an expert bridge player, a board games and cards cheater, and a model railroad builder. He loved his trains. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Franciscan Friars will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
