Obituary for Richard E. Clopper

Peoria- Richard E. Clopper, age 83, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018, with his wife and daughter by his side, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.

Rich was born November 27, 1934 in Peoria, son of Dr. Paul W. and Emma (Fey) Clopper. He married Jean Palmer, February 24, 1962, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. She survives. Also surviving are daughter, Christine (Dennis) Newell, two grandsons, Jared and Blake, numerous nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law, Jo (Beyer) Clopper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Gert Becker, and one brother, Paul “Buz” Clopper, Jr.

Rich was a Peoria Central High School class of 1952 graduate and received his Bachelor’s degree from Knox College. He competed at the high school and college level in swimming and golf. He proudly served in the US Army from 1954-1956, then attended Bradley University, graduating with his Master’s degree.

Rich was a longtime teacher in grades K-12. The highlight of his career was working at Richwoods High School, where he coached both boys’ and girls’ swim teams to many victories. Rich’s coaching talents inspired swimmers to succeed at local, state, and All-American levels. He retired and was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. He also managed and coached at various Peoria area summer swimming programs.

Rich was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and was an avid Hawkeye fan, skier, and talented golfer, who was devoted to his daily workouts at the YMCA. Rich was grateful for the time he spent with his two poker-playing grandsons.

Cremation Rites have been accorded and a Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later date.
