Obituary for Richard "Dick" Barr
Richard “Dick” Barr, 88, of Peoria, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, May 28, 2022.
He was born in Peoria on August 29, 1933 to Ruth (Hendren) and Arthur Barr. He married Patricia Friebus on June 7, 1958. They enjoyed 54 years together before her death in 2012.
Dick is survived by their daughters, Pamela Barr (Bill Bogner) of Atlanta, GA, Kerri (Larry) Oberle of Terre Haute, IN, and Beth (Rick) Owens of Oak Creek, CO; and three grandchildren, Zach, Maxwell and Sara Oberle.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert “Bob” Barr.
Dick was a 1951 graduate of Spalding Institute. He then joined the United States Navy where he served on the USS Yellowstone as an electrician along with working with gyroscopes. During his service he developed tuberculosis and was sent to Hines VA Hospital in Chicago. There he met his future wife, Patricia, who worked on his floor as a Unit Clerk. After marriage, they moved to Peoria where Dick began his decades long career with Phillips Swager & Assoc. There, he was hired as a draftsman, and worked his way to becoming a licensed Architect.
Loved by his family, Dick was always there for his daughters throughout their lives. From putting the heads on snowmen and Barbie dolls as children, to assisting them with home projects and maintenance as adults, he was always there to help and guide them. He will be remembered for his easy going nature, dry sense of humor, and his ability to fold a white cotton handkerchief into a small white mouse, much to the delight of his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by many.
His daughters would like to thank the staff, nurses and caregivers at Buehler Home for their kind and compassionate care during his residency. Our father always spoke highly of all of you.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A private service for family will be held at a later date.
