Obituary for Richard "Dick" A. Basso

Peoria-Richard A. (Dick) Basso, age 84, of Peoria died, surrounded by his loving family, at 4:15 p.m. Thursday May 25, 2017, at Rosewood Care Center in Peoria.

Born August 9, 1932, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Joseph and Mary (DeMarco) Basso, he married Jeanine M. Feiler on November 13, 1954, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria. Dick then married Diana Dentino-Zimmerman on June 20, 1992 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in South Beloit, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Jeanine and his second wife Diana. Surviving are his children; Richard Basso (Nancy McCartney) of Morton, Victoria (Patrick) Hoover of Daytona Beach, FL., Valencia (Robert) Coletta of Dunlap, Joanna (Roger) Kirkhuff of Peoria, Joseph A. Basso of Peoria and step-son Frank (Jennifer) Zimmerman of Arlington Heights; 16 grandchildren; one sister, Joan (Oscar) Weber of Peoria; as well as, many nieces and nephews.

Dick attended St. Anthony’s grade school in Rockford and then St. Bernard’s grade school in Peoria. Dick went on to attend Spalding Institute for two years and then, in 1951 joined the Marine Corps, served in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954. In 2010 Dick’s classmates at Spalding petitioned the Catholic Diocese of Peoria and he was awarded an honorary high school diploma by the Diocese certifying him as a 1952 graduate of Spalding Institute. It was a beautiful ceremony and Dick was so proud to finally become an “official” member of his class!

He owned and operated Mid-State Terrazzo & Tile Company, founded in 1947 by his parents. During his tenure Dick expanded the business and accomplished many notable large terrazzo and tile jobs at hospitals, schools, court houses, breweries, hotels and many other large commercial and government buildings in the Central and Southern Illinois areas.

Dick was the recipient of the Proud Eagle Award and the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction of Bradley University. He was a Trustee of the Combined Central Illinois Construction Industry Fund for 28 years, a Trustee of the Carpenters Retirement Fund, past President of the Greater Peoria Contractors and Suppliers Association, Trustee and past Chairman of the Bricklayers Benefit Fund, a long-time member and past President of the North Central Terrazzo Association, a member of the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association, and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Spalding Council #427 and the Italian-American Society of Peoria (Dick was so proud of his heritage).

Dick’s family would like to thank the Staff at Liberty Village, Heartis and Rosewood and Drs. Barry Miller and Bhagat Aulakh for their compassionate care and friendship. The family also gives thanks to Dick’s special care givers, Elizabeth Bundy and Jen Ford, for their tireless years of care and compassion, and Ken McGann who visited and delivered Holy Communion every Sunday.
Dick was, at his essence, a social butterfly. In short, he loved to be everywhere, with everyone and get everybody together. He truly loved spending time with people. On his behalf, his children sincerely thank all of his relatives, friends and classmates who regularly visited him and made his remaining days full and rich with camaraderie and friendship. We will miss you BENE PAISANO (good buddy)!
