Obituary for Ray James Wood

PEORIA - Ray James Wood, 86, of Peoria passed away at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2016, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Ray was born on Oct. 7, 1929, in Bloomington, Ill., to the late Floyd and Marjorie (Paulsen) Wood. He married Janice Brown on April 14, 1951.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Steve “Woody.”

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Janice; two sons, Mike (Patti) and Kevin both of Peoria; one daughter, Deborah LaBelle of Baltimore, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Edie of Peoria; two sisters, Carol (Gerald) Hankes of Auburn, Ala., and Mary Ann of Bloomington; six grandchildren, Amanda (Chris) Bland, Vanessa (Rich) Krumholz, Erin (Greg) Miller, Ryan Wood, Chandra Labelle and Cheryl (Aaron) Labelle-Reed; and nine great-grandchildren.

Ray was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He retired as a life underwriter from Prudential in 1991 after 20 years of service. For the past 13 years, he was employed at the Clubs at Rive rCity, where he opened up the gym in the early morning hours, always with a smile and often with a joke.

He was known for telling jokes and stories. He never knew a stranger and made conversation with anyone who would listen. When asked how he was, he would say, “Couldn’t be better.”
Ray also loved golf and working in his yard. He sang for years in several of St. Vincent de Paul’s choirs, most recently the funeral choir.

He was a member of the Peoria Jazz Society and was a starter for the Peoria Park District’s golf courses for many years.

Ray was a great friend to all, a devoted husband and father, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to brag about his great accomplishment – his family.

A funeral Mass for Ray will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 17, 2016, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass Friday at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded and a private burial of ashes will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
