Obituary for Peter Gerontes

PEORIA Peter Gerontes, 84, of Peoria passed away at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
Peter was born on Mar. 24, 1931, in Peoria to the late Socrates and Katherine (Litsadorpoulas) Gerontes. He married Judith E. Worries on May 10, 1959, at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Peoria. She survives.
He is also survived by his children, Nicholas P. (Cynthia) Gerontes of St. Louis, Lisa (Joseph) Gerontes-Bowe of Peoria, Gregory (Karen) Gerontes of Brimfield; six grandchildren, J. Michael Bowe, Chloe Bowe, Katherine Gerontes, Matthew Gerontes, Eleni Gerontes, and Lt. Jason Gerontes; one sister, Helen S. Koulogeorge of Park Ridge, Ill.; and two nieces Marina Koulogeorge of Chicago and Nina Koulogeorge of New York.
Peter attended Woodruff High School and was a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.
He joined the Peoria City Police Department in 1958, working there for 27 years and attaining the rank of sergeant. While there, he assisted in the development of the first Crime Scene Unit Forensics Lab at the Peoria Police Department under the direction of Chief Alan Andrews. It was there that he provided the first fingerprint as evidence that led to a murder conviction in Peoria County. He later joined the Peoria County Sherriffs Department in 1985 under George P. Shadid, at the rank of captain and retired as Field Operations Commander. He was Policeman of the Year in 1965 and was awarded the Combat Valor Award on Oct. 15, 1966.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. Father Ciprian Sas will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, at Wright Salmon Mortuary, with a Trisagion service at 6:30 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Liturgy at the church. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.
