Obituary for Penelope "Penny" Kay Scherer

PEORIA – Penelope “Penny” Kay Scherer, 71, of Peoria passed away peacefully at 11:47 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at home with her family gathered together by her side in prayer. Preceding her in death are her parents; sister, Jo Lynne Sherman; brother, Gary Sherman; and granddaughter, Emma Maske. Penny was born Dec. 27, 1943, to Paul M. Sherman and Emma Lou (Ralls) Aten in Pekin, Ill. She is survived by her beloved husband, James G. Scherer of Peoria; her three daughters, Jody (Marc) Maske of Peoria, Jill (Henry) Vicary of Morton, Jolynn (Trey) Robbins of Frankfort, Ill.; one son, Jim (Eryn) Scherer of Peoria; her grandchildren, Madilyn and Joseph Maske, Connor and Olivia Vicary, Benjamin and James Scott Robbins, and Evan, Imogen and Francine Scherer; her sister, Paula (Wally) Welch of Asheville, N.C.; and her brother, Jim Connor of Groveland, Ill. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, along with dear friends. Penny graduated from Pekin High School in 1961 and attended Pasadena College of Theater Arts in Pasadena, Calif. She returned home and worked for WEEK-TV, where she previously had been a regular actress and cast member on the Bill Houlihan television program, “The Hi-Fi Club.” Penny was a proud homemaker and tenacious matriarch of the Scherer Automotive family dealerships. She was a Eucharistic minister and member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, Ill., as well as a member of the ENP’s sorority. She was on the advisory board of the Central Illinois Memorial Kidney Fund, the Central Illinois Mental Health Association, and the Cursillo; and she volunteered for many of the OSF Children’s Miracle Network telethons. The Penny and Jim Scherer family was the OSF CHOI Children’s Miracle Network telethon honorary co-chair family in 2005. In 2008, Penny Scherer was awarded the Children’s Home and Center for Prevention of Abuse PARTNERS IN PEACE award. With this award came the following description of Penny, “Penny Scherer is an example of how one person can make a difference in the struggle against violence in central Illinois.” Among her many other endeavors, Penny formed a Miracle in Rwanda Committee raising thousands of dollars for Dream Center Peoria to help aid in the fight against violence. Penny Scherer exuded an indomitable spirit for living life. Even when faced with significant health challenges, she lived life to the fullest. She was dearly loved by all those she touched and loved the Lord, Jesus Christ, with all her heart. Penny converted to Catholicism on her wedding day when she married Jim, the love of her life, on Aug. 27, 1966, at St. Thomas Church. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Msgr. William Watson and Fr. Thomas Taylor will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday March 24, 2015, also at the church. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
