Obituary for Penelope "Penny" A. Meyer
Peoria- Penelope Ann "Penny" Meyer, 81, of Kickapoo, died January 3, 2018, in Peoria.
She was born February 15, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to Royden Orlo and Clara Matilda (Schmid) Butterfield but moved to Peoria at a young age and lived in the Peoria area the rest of her life.
Penny graduated from Bradley University where she was president of the Delta Zeta sorority and served as their treasurer for over 20 years. She acted in theatre while attending Bradley and afterwards in Corn Stock Theatre productions. She taught high school English and Speech in Dunlap and Delavan schools before leaving teaching to be a full-time wife and mother.
She married Thomas Francis Meyer on August 15, 1959 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Peoria; he survives. Also surviving are their three children, Royden Meyer of Sparland, Sheree Davis of Peoria and Carol (Rick) Gilles of Brimfield; eight grandchildren, Jared (Rachel) Volk, Casey (Caitlin) Volk, Jennifer Volk, Ashley (Matt) Arbogast, Taylor Davis, Garret Davis, Kathryn Meyer and Kallie Meyer; seven great-grandchildren and her brother Royden (Gladys) Butterfield of Peoria.
One grandson, Cody Gilles, and one great-granddaughter, Everly Volk, preceded her in death.
Penny and Tom traveled extensively, annually with their children and later as a retired couple, seeing all 50 states, all the Canadian provinces and 17 European countries. More often than not, they made their travel plans by looking for places they hadn't yet been.
Penny loved her lunches with the girls and was an avid reader, sometimes reading more than a novel a week. She enjoyed science fiction and period pieces among other things.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am, Friday, January 12, 2018 at St. Bernard Catholic Church with a visitation beginning at 9:00 am. Fr. James Pankiewicz will officiate. Cremation Rites have been accorded and burial of ashes will follow in Springdale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cody's Crusaders or The American Cancer Society.
