Obituary for Paul E. Nielsen

PEORIA – Paul E. Nielsen, 86, of Peoria, passed away at 12:24 p.m., Monday, September 23, 2013, at Proctor Hospital. Paul was born on September 12, 1927, in Kenosha, WI, to Niels and Thora (Fuglsang) Nielsen. He married Jean Kleist, whom he always lovingly referred to as his beloved bride, on August 12, 1950, at St. George Catholic Church in Kenosha, WI. She survives. He is also survived by four sons, Kenneth (Karen) Nielsen of Peoria, Gary (Traci) Nielsen of San Antonio, Bruce (Barb) Nielsen of Peoria, and James (Diane) Nielsen of Hudson, OH; one daughter, Paula (David) Henderson of Peoria; twenty grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Hankins of Kenosha, WI; and several nieces and nephews. Paul was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II. He later worked as an accountant at Caterpillar for 36 years, retiring in 1987. He was a diehard Packer fan and enjoyed his time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was also an active member in many golf and bowling leagues and was a member of the Optimist Club, National Association of Accountants (Emeritus), and Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree. He also volunteered for the Heart of Illinois Harvest. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Friday, September 27, 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Rev. John Cyr will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Thursday following the visitation at the mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent School Endowment Fund.
