Obituary for Patrick McLaughlin
Patrick McLaughlin, 77, of Peoria, IL, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2022 at home, surrounded by his loving family. The last years of his life, he was cared for at home, by his family, due to his health decline related to frontotemporal degeneration.
He is survived by his wife Glenda, daughter Colleen Watt and sons, Patrick (Susie) of Champaign, and Timothy (Jennifer) of Bellingham, WA. He was grandfather to Molly (Brett) Nieber, Emma Watt, Logan Hills, and Eullan and Doran McLaughlin and great-grandfather to Ava Nieber, and Rain and Ezra Hills. He is also survived by his sisters Margaret Sanzotta and Jean Reed of Bloomington, Catherine Gillette (Daniel) of Chillicothe, sister in law Shirley McLaughlin of San Ramon, CA, brother in law Richard Cain of Peoria, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret (Colgan) McLaughlin, brothers, James, William, and Thomas, sister, Suzanne (Cain) and brothers-in-law Joseph Reed and Vincent Sanzotta.
Patrick was born in Peoria on March 3, 1945 and enjoyed a rough and tumble childhood in Peoria’s west side. He attended St. Mark’s Grade School and graduated from Spalding Institute in 1964. He proudly served in the US Air Force and attended Illinois State University on the GI Bill, earning a BS in marketing.
Patrick and Glenda raised their family in Peoria and were members of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church for many years. Following a career in industrial safety, Patrick moved to Arizona and earned Graduate Degrees in counseling in 2000 and 2002 from Northern Arizona University. He returned home to Peoria in 2005 and worked as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor until his retirement in 2010.
Patrick requested Cremation Rites to be accorded. To honor his wishes and in remembrance, there will be a visitation from 10:30 AM 12:00 PM on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at St. Thomas Church in Peoria Heights. A Memorial Mass will be at 12:00 PM, also at the church, with Msgr. Jason Gray officiating. Military Honors will follow Mass in Patrick’s memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Bob Michael Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic, 7717 N Orange Prairie Rd, Peoria, Il, 61615.
