Obituary for Patrick Friede
Patrick Friede, 76, of Brimfield, IL passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022, at UnityPoint Health - Methodist Hospital. Pat was born on October 12, 1945 in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Edwin and Catherine (Burke) Friede. He married Lynda Fox on July 14th, 1973, in Peoria, IL. He was preceded in death by his mom, Catherine, his dad, Edwin, and his brother Allan Friede. He is survived by his wife, Lynda, and his two daughters, Jennifer (Gary) Shadid of Peoria, Robin (John) Schaffer of Germantown Hills, and his five grandkids, Andrew Schaffer, Ellie Schaffer, Sarah Schaffer, Gabriel Shadid, and Michael Shadid. He is also survived by four additional grandkids, Peter Shadid, Jack Shadid, Grace Shadid, and David Shadid. He also leaves behind his sister, Mary Kay (Allen) Arp of Yutan, Nebraska and his sister-in-law, Linda Friede of Peoria.
Pat graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering in 1968. He worked for Caterpillar in numerous engineering roles (Excavators, Track-Type Tractors, Challenger Ag Tractors, and Motor Graders) for 41 years before he retired in 2009. Throughout his career, he combined his love of talking with people and engineering to help make people and the world a better place. Pat’s favorite engineering assignment was when he was the TSD project lead on the Caterpillar Challenger belted concept tractors. Pat was part of a team that developed a patent for a tractor with endless drive belts. The Challenger 55 and MT 765 were two models of which he was the most proud. It combined his childhood experiences of growing up on the family farm in Nebraska, getting to talk and work with people, and engineering. After retiring, Pat realized that he missed working with people and returned to work in a part time role that allowed him to review technical papers and mentor engineers at the Peoria Proving Grounds (PPG). His last part time role at PPG was as a tour guide showing people “All the important work” that took place at this location. Outside of work, Pat loved spending time with family and friends, meeting and talking to new people, and sharing a meal or coffee with family and friends (new and old). Pat always tried to make the
world a little better and a bit more organized. Anyone who knew Pat, knows he was successful at these pursuits and could rarely be seen without his cowboy hat and boots. His daughters will also miss the early morning, almost daily texts, with pictures of cartoons from the newspaper he was reading and a reminder to be thankful for the day and make it a good one.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, July 22, 2022 at St. Mary’s Church in Kickapoo with a half hour prior visitation. Fr. James Pankiewicz will officiate. Rosary will be at 3:30 pm followed by visitation from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Wright and Salmon Mortuary. Burial will follow Mass at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kickapoo.
