Obituary for Patricia Ruth Montgomery

Patricia Ruth Montgomery passed away on Wednesday, February 16th at the Richard Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, Il surrounded by her family.

She was born on 12/27/1930 in Springfield Illinois to Maggie (Bowe) and Otto Ansel Snodgrass, the seventh of eight children.
She graduated from Springfield high school and then attended the Springfield Business College while also working as an executive secretary for the IBEW. She had lost her father at a young age and lived with and cared for her mother along with her younger brother Larry.

It was during this time she met her husband while tobogganing with a big group of friends. And according to him he knew the minute he saw her that she was the one.

She married Charles Edward Montgomery on October 6th, 1956 in Springfield. After a brief honeymoon in the Ozarks he was stationed right away in the army in Frederick Maryland in the biological warfare division. They later moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin, Charlotte NC and eventually settled in Peoria where they remained.

She was a long time member of the Medical Auxiliary and was Vice President at one point. She was a compassionate volunteer with them as well as Meals on Wheels. She loved to play tennis and played many years recreationally in Peoria. She had a small regular group of her close friends that played weekly at her home followed by bloody marys on the deck.
Mom and dad spent many wonderful years on Anna Maria island where they also made lifelong wonderful friends.
She was a long time survivor of multiple battles with breast cancer and later in her life ureteral and kidney cancer. She loved poetry, music, dancing, and tennis. But her great loves were her husband, her children and especially her grandchildren.
It was an indescribable bond that she felt with each of them that was evident to all of us.

She was predeceased by her parents and all of her seven siblings. She remained especially proud of and close to her many nieces and nephews. She loved them all in a very special way and spent the last few years telling us more and more about her life and her siblings and their families. Her brother Jack walked her down the aisle when she married and she was grateful for his and Janies love and support during their time in Milwaukee. Her siblings were Louise Bogardus, Thomas Paul
Snodgrass, Marcella Helen Kikendall, Virginia Catherine Quay, John Pershing (Jack) Snodgrass, Elizabeth Ann Clayton and Larry Snodgrass.

She was also like sisters with her sister in law Sally (and Dr. John) Pirris. They shared travels together and spent special time with her brother in law John and Martha Montgomery in Africa after retirement.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years Dr. Charles E Montgomery and their five children. Kevin (Carolyn) Kikendall, Maggie (Paul) Berres, Ann (David) Best, Sarah (Dan) Lucas, Charlie (Rhonda) Montgomery. As well as 23 grandchildren, Nicki (Eric) Kikendall Moore, Stacy (Dan) Cryer, Ruth (Paul) Armenakis, Jack Berres, Clare (Peter) Cunningham, Lucy Berres, Max Berres, Joe (Maria) Coletta, Michael Best, Rachel (Mike) Houston, Andrew Lucas, Charlie (Faith Pritchard) Montgomery, Jessica (Grant) Lees, Samantha Montgomery, Alexandra Montgomery. And Chris Lucas, Danny Lucas, Molly Best Dejohn, Tim Best, Abby Best Hammes, George Best, Andrew Motyl, Eric Motyl. And 15 great grandchildren.

There will be a visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Monday, February 21st at St. Vincent De Paul Church in Peoria. Funeral mass will be Tuesday 11:00 am, February 22 at St. Vincent De Paul Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful caregivers over the last three years. Dr. Michael Veeder and his staff at Illinois Cancer Care, Nurses Caring for People whoʼs tender care allowed her to stay at home, and the team at Richard Owens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Cancer Care Foundation, Richard Owens Hospice Home or St. Vincent De Paul Church.
