Obituary for Patricia Jean Scherer
Peoria- Patricia Jean Scherer, age 93, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family at 12:30 PM, December 3, 2016 at Buehler Home in Peoria, IL.
Patty was born August 12, 1923, on a farm outside of Boone, Iowa, a daughter of Josephine (Sullivan) and Robert Emmet Cox. In the early 1930s, the family moved to Peoria, where Patty graduated from The Academy of Our Lady. She remained a loyal Peoria resident the rest of her life.
Patty married the love of her life, John O. Scherer on April 3, 1948 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and enjoyed a rich and happy relationship until his death in 1992. Patty’s interests ranged from fashion to gardening but family and faith were truly the touchstones of her life. She was known for her baking prowess: especially her chocolate roll (only available at Christmas) and her pies: lemon meringue, cherry and apple.
Patty was a member and active parishioner, with John, of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, founded by longtime friend, Msgr. Robert Livingston. She loved working in the fashion industry and her trips to New York City, as a buyer for D. Schaffer. Patty started her own women’s clothing store, Carriage Lane in Peoria, and was consulted as a fashion advisor for many years.
She is survived by two daughters; Susan Scherer Calandra (Philip) of Foster City, CA and Katy Scherer Fox (Terry) of Dunlap, IL, one son; Patrick Scherer of Peoria, grandchildren; Kylie Fox and John Calandra, niece and goddaughter, Mary Jo Duffy, along with numerous other nieces and nephews. Her husband’s siblings and families also survive her. James Scherer, Sue Scherer Conner and Mary Scherer were beloved lifelong friends to Patty.
Patty was predeceased by her husband, her sister, Mary Frances Duffy and brother, Robert G. Cox. Also predeceasing her were a number of family dogs, whom she loved and spoiled. No doubt, Gigi and Dickens led the pack.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul School Endowment, 6001 N. University St. Peoria, IL 61614, or the A.R.K. Animal Shelter in Lacon, IL, 477 State Route 26, Lacon, IL 61540.
Visitation will be 4:00 – 6:00 PM, Friday, December 9, 2016 and a half hour prior to Mass, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with a recitation of the Rosary at 6:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the church. Father James Pallardy will officiate. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum.
