Obituary for Norma B. Harrington

Norma Barnihizer Harrington, 92, of Peoria IL, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017. Norma was born to Loretta Kelly Barnhizer and Joseph Barnhizer on March 11, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from St. Francis High School, Lafayette, Indiana, and worked at Purdue University School of Veterinary Science. In 1948, she married Timothy Francis Harrington at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette, Indiana. She retired from her position as administrative assistant to the president of Brown Rubber Company at the birth of her first child Paula.

During their first years of marriage Norma and Timothy lived in different parts of the United States, as he pursued his career with Caterpillar Tractor Company. The couple had four daughters. In the early 1960’s, the couple provided their daughters with the wonderful experience of living on the family farm in Otterbein, Indiana. These were happy years as the girls played with their cousins, and Norma tackled the unfamiliar landscape of farm life with humor and enthusiasm.

The family settled in Geneva, Switzerland in 1966 and traveled the world together.
Norma and Timothy moved back to Peoria in 1975. Her loving husband of 58 years passed away in 2006.

Norma was a charming hostess and entertained people from many countries with grace and panache. She possessed a keen and curious mind that underscored her brilliant conversational skills. Her quick wit and compassionate nature made her an outstanding mother and a fun and loyal friend. People adored her. She will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Norma is predeceased by her only sibling Patricia Barnhizer. Surviving are four daughters: Paula Ridenour, Naperville, IL; Janis Harrington, Chapel Hill, NC; Julie Rybinski, San Diego, CA; and Leslie Harrington, Ann Arbor, MI; six grandchildren: Scott Voegele, Naperville, IL; Tricia Dowler and Timothy Bowker, Indianapolis, IN; Erin Conchon-Tanner, presently living in Rwanda; Claire Rybinski ,New York City; Elizabeth Bowker, Ann Arbor, MI; and seven great-grandchildren: Lauren and Alex Voegele; Savannah and Zachary Dowler; Benoit and Charlotte Conchon; and Timothy Bowker.

Rural St, Indianapolis Indiana, on Friday June 23 at 10 a.m. followed by a graveside service officiated by Norma’s nephew Rev. Christopher Wadelton and her brother-in-law Father Jeremy Harrington. Luncheon will follow at the home of Timothy Harrington Bowker.
