Obituary for Nancy Marshall

Peoria, IL – Nancy Dawson Marshall, a longtime Peoria resident and wife of the late William H. “Bill” Marshall, M.D., passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. She was 89 years old. Nancy’s love of family, the outdoors, travel, her sense of fun and humor were endearing to all who knew her.

Nancy was born September 23, 1931 in Omaha, NE to Francis and Verna Dawson. She graduated from Our Lady of Angels Academy in Clinton, IA and St. Margaret’s School of Nursing in Hammond, IN. A devoted nurse, Nancy worked in pediatrics at the University of Illinois Hospitals in Chicago in the mid-1950s, where she became acquainted with Bill, who was a medical intern at the time. Indulging an early love of travel, Nancy joined the Santa Fe Railroad as a courier nurse, serving on the transcontinental trains between Chicago and Los Angeles. Upon her return to Chicago, a mutual friend reintroduced Nancy to Bill. The couple wed and eventually settled in Peoria in 1964 where they raised five children and remained married until Bill’s passing 62 years later.

Nancy was first and foremost a loving wife and mother who took joy in raising her children and establishing a home to care for all. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, the Peoria Medical Alliance, the Country Club of Peoria, the Peoria Riverfront Museum and the Union League Club of Chicago. She played tennis, was an excellent skier and was active for many years. She enjoyed traveling with Bill, visiting art galleries, attending the theater and musical concerts. Together, they worked to share and encourage enjoyment of the arts in Peoria, serving as benefactors to Lakeview Museum and its present-day successor, Peoria Riverfront Museum, for more than 30 years.

Nancy is survived by sons, Daniel Marshall, PhD (Nancy) of Arlington, MA, James D. Marshall, MD (Susan) of Fort Worth, TX and Jack Marshall, MD (Lisa) of Bloomington, IL; daughters Julia Marshall of Oak Park, IL and Mary Marshall Grace (Rob) of Napa Valley, CA; grandchildren Madeleine, Rodney, William, Charles, Nicholas, Nathan, Jamie, Eva and Isabelle; and great granddaughter Emmy Lucille.

A private funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Peoria Heights. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Fr. Paul Stark will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Thomas Catholic Church at or by contacting Terri Moon at the church office, 309-688-3446.
