Obituary for Nancy Luise Scurry

PEORIA – Nancy Luise Scurry, 76 of Peoria, died at 7:35 p.m., Monday, July 15, 2013, at her home surrounded by family. Born June 4, 1937, in Peoria to Obed A. and Marjory M. (Sutton) Genzel, she married G. Michael Scurry on May 25, 1957, at Holy Family Church in Peoria. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, James F. Scurry; daughter-in-law, Donna Scurry; and her brother, Donald A. Genzel. Surviving are her daughter, Patricia (Tim) Smith of Peoria; sons, Douglas (fiancé Lisa Lee) Scurry of Mason, OH, and William (Amy) Scurry of Peoria; eleven grandchildren, Amy (Branson) Moreno, Calli, Nicholas, and Jeffrey Smith, Zachary, Tyler, and Lauren Scurry all of Peoria and Daniel, Matthew, and Bradley Scurry, and Sierra Ballard all of Mason, OH; one sister, Mary E. Genzel of Peoria; one brother, Fred (Dyan) Genzel; sister-in-law, Jane Genzel; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Nancy graduated from Academy of Our Lady in 1954. After raising her family, Nancy worked at fp Mail Systems. She later became co-owner of Mail Tech Enterprises, Inc. She retired in 2004. She was a charter member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister, served on the finance committee and was a trustee of the church. Nancy was very active in the Peoria Cursillo and served as Rectora in 1997, #533 and on several teams. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Peoria, the St. Vincent de Paul Women’s Guild, the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group, and the Knights of Columbus Women’s Auxiliary. She also volunteered as a Peace Pal at Garfield and Trewyn Elementary Schools, helping children improve their reading skills. Nancy enjoyed traveling with her husband Mike, family and good friends. The family would like to thank all of Nancy’s caregivers and the staff of 1700 at OSF for their kind and caring support. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father James Pallardy will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Friday, July 19, 2013, at the church. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass also at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made in Nancy’s honor to Wildlife Prairie Park, where her granddaughter, Calli, works to educate people about animals or to the Illinois CancerCare Foundation.
