Obituary for N. Mercedes Gummerson

PEORIA-N. Mercedes "Merce" Gummerson, 99, of Peoria, passed away at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at JC Proctor Endowment Home. She was born on June 12, 1911, in Peoria, to Roy B. and Eleanor Connor Baker. She married Joseph E. Gummerson, Sr. on June 16, 1935, in Peoria. He passed away on January 23, 1998, in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by one son, James on April 20, 1958, two grandchildren, Jim and Theresa and two brothers. Surviving are one son, Joseph E. Jr. (Mary Kay) Gummerson of Duluth, MN; one daughter, Mary M. Heyl of Woodstock, GA; five grandchildren, Debra (Tim) Robbins of Glasford, Susan (Steve) Verardo of Canton, Mary Jo Norrell of Canton, Craig (Dana) Heyl of Decatur, GA and Matthew (Sherry) Heyl of Alpharetta, GA; seven great-grandchildren, Bradlee, Breeanon, Bailee, Zoe, Christian, Dylan and Faith; one great great-grandson, Reese; and many nieces and nephews. Merce taught at Redeemer Lutheran School, St. Mary's School and St. Bernard’s School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic Women’s League, St. Joseph Sodality, and the Altar & Rosary Society at Sacred Heart Church. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Sacred Heart Church with Franciscan Fathers officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
