Obituary for Michael James Faley

Michael James Faley, age 100, passed away peacefully at home with family on Sunday, February 14, 2021. “Mickey,” as he was known, was born on September 4, 1920, the only son of Michael August and Bridget (Schaell) Faley in Ohio, IL.

Michael attended a one room country school house and Ohio Illinois High School before matriculating at Western Illinois University. During his senior year of college, he volunteered for the United States Army. He honorably served as an Army Medic in Central Europe during World War II. Mike landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus two. He worked in the 51st Field Hospital of the 1st Army in France and Germany. At the conclusion of the War, he returned to Western to finish his degree.

On May 29, 1948 he married Marie Thelma Meyer at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Peoria, and together they cherished 56 years until her passing in 2004.

Michael worked for the TP & W Railroad for 32 years until his retirement in 1982 and then dedicated his life to volunteering around Peoria. He was an active parishioner of St. Bernard Catholic Church where he loved to partake in coffee and donuts after Sunday Mass. He was a loyal volunteer at OSF St. Francis Medical Center for 32 years, and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd degree, 4th Degree Spalding Assembly #206, former Alhambra, Peoria Transportation Club, Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the St. Patrick’s Society, VFW Post 814, and American Legion Post #2. Mike was a member of the Knights of Columbus Spalding Council #427 for 77 years. 35 of those years he served in the Bishop’s Honor Guard.
His enthusiastic endeavors gained him praise and lifetime awards virtually everywhere he volunteered. For a relatively quiet man, he enjoyed interacting with and helping other people. In honor of his dedication to volunteering, he received the Governor’s Volunteer Service in 2012 in Springfield, IL.

Michael’s Catholic faith, extended family, his 100% Irish heritage and anything pertaining to Ireland were very important to him. Michael wouldn’t think of missing a family celebration. He attended every wedding, birthday, Baptism, Confirmation, and graduation of all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Well into his 90s, he had reserved the next dance at his granddaughters’ weddings after the father of the bride dance— something everyone looked forward to.

He is survived by six children: Maureen Pellino (Rick) of The Villages, FL; Colleen Egan (Tom) of St. Petersburg, FL; Patrick (Jill) of East Peoria; Thomas (Nancy) of Peoria; Michael (Molly) of Peoria; and Kevin (Stephanie) of Park Ridge, IL. He was also blessed with 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who was loved and will be deeply missed.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marie, infant son Michael, infant daughter Catherine and son James Faley.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Peoria with Father Jim Pankiewicz officiating. Visitation will be held before Mass from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. All COVID and social distancing protocols will be followed and masks are required. A private family interment with military honors will occur at a later time at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Peoria, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Michael’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Friends and family may sign the online guestbook or send condolences at www.wrightandsalmon.com
