Obituary for Michael H. Hitz Jr.

CHAMPAIGN - Michael H. Hitz, Jr., 46, of Champaign, formerly of Kickapoo, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign. Michael was born on September 28, 1967, at Methodist Hospital to Michael H., Sr. and Mary (Tucek) Hitz. He is survived by his parents, Mike and Mary; brother, Richard Thomas (Jennifer) Hitz of Bloomington; sister, Tracie Marie Hitz of Indianapolis, IN; and nephews, Joshua Cameron Hitz and Jeremy Michael Hitz both of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Joseph Edward Hitz (1968) and David Andrew Hitz (1971); paternal grandparents, W. James & Mary (Errion) Hitz; maternal grandparents, Richard Charles and Mary (Yakoff) Tucek; and uncle, Tom Hitz. Michael enjoyed his time with the Peoria Park Police Explorers under the supervision of Chief Ken Weir and his time with the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department as part of his Criminal Justice studies. Due to injuries received in an auto accident, he was unable to fulfill his wishes of joining the Air Force or pursue a career in law enforcement. After graduation from college, he moved to Champaign where he worked for Flav-Bro Inc. He later moved to Columbia, TN, where he was employed by Shepherd Lumber Company. After his divorce, he returned to Champaign and worked for the Champaign County Humane Society. Prior to his diagnosis, he was lab manager for Eyemart Express. Michael was a warm caring person who never met a stranger. He liked making new friends and treasured the friends he had. Family was a top priority; and he enjoyed being home for family celebrations and holiday gatherings and time spent with his parents, siblings and nephews. His interests were many but he especially enjoyed reading, target shooting, gaming, bocce ball, and horseshoes with friends. Michael will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Michael had been battling brain cancer since July 11, 2012. His courage and gentle manner in dealing with all of the hospitalizations and treatments were an inspiration to family, friends and the medical staff. Throughout his ordeal he never complained or asked “Why me?” The family would like to express their deep thanks to Dr. Mark Zhang, oncologist, who made it possible for us to have Michael 15 months longer than was expected and both his office and hospital staff for their professional and caring treatment of our son throughout this difficult journey. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church of Kickapoo. Father John Verrier will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. A funeral luncheon will be served at St. Mary’s Parish Hall immediately following the burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kickapoo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Kickapoo or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to www.wrightandsalmon.com.
