Peoria- Michael Ferruzza, 92, of Peoria passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2017.
Mike was born January 9, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York, the oldest of three sons of Joseph and Anna (Crane) Ferruzza.
Mike met his future wife, Ellen Shelton, of Niles, Ohio, when he accompanied her older brother home on leave from the Army in March of 1943. Mike and Ellen married on July 15, 1950, at St. Stephen's Church in Niles, Ohio. The family moved to Peoria in 1960 and Mike began at Caterpillar in February of 1965. His real passion was radio and longtime Peorians may remember “Mike Ferris” from his broadcasting stints at WAAP and WMBD-AM.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, both brothers, and his beloved Ellen; he is survived by their daughters, Grace (Dave) Couri, Marianne (Tom) Maggio, and Pat (Steve Jochums) Ferruzza; their sons, Jim, Tom (Ted Holliman), and Mike (Kat); 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
There will be a private Celebration of Life and Mike has been laid to rest next to Ellen in Resurrection Mausoleum.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association-Illinois Chapter in Peoria and/or WCBU-FM radio.
Over the years Mike read countless stories to his children, and then to his grandchildren, and even to some of his great-grandchildren. Each and every time he finished the story with these words, “The end. Bump, bump.”
