Obituary for Michael James "Mick" Kenny
PEORIA – Michael James “Mick” Kenny of Peoria passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018, at 7:35a.m at his residence.
He was born on July 9, 1950, in Peoria to James M. and Jeanne H. Kelly Kenny. He married Karen C. O’Donnell Kenny on Oct 25, 1975, in Peoria. She survives, along with three children, Ryan (Nicole), Colin (Renee), and Corey, and three adoptive children, Caleb Derestil (Ansama), Douna Charles-Kenny and Fenelus Marcony.
Also surviving are ten grandchildren; as well as one brother, Tim (Barbara) Kenny of Peoria; and two sisters, Sheila (Doug) Eccles of East Peoria and Molly (Dan) Flynn of Dallas, TX.
Mick retired from Caterpillar in 2016 after 43 years as a laborer before transitioning full-time into the most present and most supportive dad, husband, friend and (especially) grandfather that anyone could ask to have. He was also a graduate of St Mark Catholic Grade School and Spalding Institute (1968).
He was an incredibly avid sports fan, voracious reader of books and a volunteer youth baseball and basketball coach, which he worked at for over 30 years. Mick loved to help people. When not walking with friends at the Riverplex, or carting grandkids around to the library or to ballgames, or travelling with his wife, he worked as an usher at Dozer Park and the Civic Center in his retirement years.
Mick had an innate and sometimes uncanny capacity to care for and serve others. This was perhaps Mick’s signature characteristic, and that unique quality will leave an indelible void in so many of the lives that were touched by his presence and grace.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2018, between the hours of 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church, with an additional visitation being held 60 minutes prior to mass. Cremation rites will be accorded after Mass. A private burial will take place at a later date.
The family would like to extend most sincere appreciation to Mick’s legion of family and friends for their outpouring of love and support during this time.
Memorials in Mick's memory may be made to Haitian Hearts.
