Obituary for Melvin Scheirer

PEORIA-Melvin Scheirer, 97 of Peoria, passed away at 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Proctor Hospital. He was born on May 25, 1910 in Low Point, IL to August and Emma Meismer Scheirer. He first married Marie Harrell on June 11, 1938 in Peoria. She passed away on January 2, 1961 in Peoria. He later married Evelyn Newcomb on February 8, 1964 in Peoria. She passed away on December 10, 1974 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by four sons, Ronald (Linda) Scheirer, Nicholas (the late, Bonnie) Scheirer and Richard (Mary) Scheirer all of Peoria and Thomas (Carol) Scheirer of Darien, IL; one step son, Paul (Pat) Newcomb of Pekin; one step daughter, Carol (Bill) Banta of New Orleans; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and one sister, Bernadine (Delmar) Whittington of Metamora. Melvin was an Agent for Prudential Insurance Co. for 37 years, then worked for 10 years at Bergner’s Department Store and a 20 year volunteer at Methodist Hospital. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and Men’s Club, Third Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop Rosatti Council in Kickapoo, Optimist Club and Elks Club. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Vincent de Paul Church with Rev. Jason Gray officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church Building Fund.
