Obituaries
Peoria - Melvin Lawrence Frericks, age 89, of Peoria, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 25, 2023.
Melvin was born in Quincy, IL, a son to Louis and Gladys (Lehman) Frericks on February 18, 1934. Mel married Shirley Ann Hagan on August 13, 1955, in Peoria and together they cherished 68 years. Mel graduated from Peoria Manual High School. He worked for Leonard A. Unes Printing as a Type Setter/Printer.
Mel was a well-loved husband, proud and devout father, and good friend to many. Known for his sense of humor, Mel was quick witted with a great smile. He was an avid fisherman, loved to travel throughout the United States, and throwing his annual smelt fry. He loved playing cards and dominos with friends and family. But mostly he took great pride in his family, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and Shirley are long time members of St. Philomena Church. He was also a member of the Peoria Typographical Union 29.
Mel is survived by his loving wife Shirley of Peoria; six children: Lynn Wilkerson, Michael (Sandy) Frericks, Karen (Lowell) Trammell, Daniel (Lisa) Frericks, Diane (Ken) Cooper and Kenneth (Lori) Frericks; 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Also, two brothers and one sister.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and a son-in-law. A schnauzer named Sam and several mutts named “Tippy”.
Visitation will be held at St. Philomena Church Saturday, September 9, 2023 one hour prior to the service at 10am. Father Daniel Dionesotes will officiate.
Preferred memorials in Mel’s memory may be made to Illinois Cancer Care or The Arthritis Foundation.

Cremation rights have been accorded.
Private burial of ashes will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.
