Obituary for Maxine Sylvia Gardner

PEORIA - Maxine Sylvia Gardner, 81, of Peoria passed away at 4:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at El Paso Health Care Center. Maxine was born January 26, 1933, in Peoria to the late Lawrence J. Sr. and Sylvia (Nave) Miller. She is survived by two daughters, Christine (Steven) Simpson of Downers Grove, Ill., and Elizabeth Gardner of Gresham, Ore.; four sons, Thomas (Elizabeth) Gardner of Gresham, Ore., Gerald “Jerry” (Louis) Gardner of West Hollywood, Calif., Daniel (Silvana) Gardner of Rockville, Md., and Benjamin (Tami) Gardner of Gresham, Ore.; two sisters, Sondra McEnroe and Mary Tegtmeyer; two brothers, Lawrence J. Jr. (Teresa) Miller and Phillip Miller; two sisters-in-law, Linda Miller and Evelyn Miller; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joseph; two brothers; and one sister. She was a graduate of the Academy of Our Lady Maxine loved books and reading, even starting the St. Philomena's library. She also enjoyed children (especially babies), volunteering, care giving, crafts, and collecting. She was very proud of both her Cherokee heritage and her Catholic faith. Maxine was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Peoria. A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Father Martin Mwongyera will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of ashes will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Peoria. Memorials may be made to Tribal Law and Policy Institute. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
