Obituary for Mary Rose Kelly
Mary Rose (Morrissey) Kelly, age 98, of Peoria, formerly of Pontiac and Washington Illinois, and recently a resident at Sunset Apartments in Quincy Illinois, died December 17th 2017, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
Mary Rose was born on May 12th, 1919 in Pontiac, Illinois to the late Rose (McMahon) and Thomas Morrissey. Her step-father, Bart Ferguson also preceded her in death. She married John M. Kelly of Minonk, Illinois, April 19th, 1940. He preceded her in death on October 31st, 1981. A son, Thomas B. Kelly, preceded her in death, October 10th, 2008.
In 1965, Mary Rose became a member of the Saint Francis School of Nursing faculty and taught for 26 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society of Nursing and a past board member of Guardianship and Advocacy Commission. She volunteered many hours to NAMI Tri- County as the organization got established in Peoria. In 1998 she received the Ruby Cealey Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Francis Alumni Association. She was a member of St. Francis Senior Saints.
Mary Rose was a Registered Professional Nurse, receiving her diploma from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1940 and her BS and MA from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois. She was employed by St. Francis Medical Center in the Labor and Delivering Department and also worked as a nurse for the American Red Cross.
Mary Rose was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, the Woman’s Guild, and the Good Samaritan Program. She served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist at St. Francis Medical Center and St. Thomas.
Mary Rose is survived by one son, Don Kelly (Nancy) of Quincy, Illinois, two grandson’s John T. Kelly (Lindsey) of Quincy, Illinois, and Ryan P. Kelly (Lindsay) of Greenwood, Indiana, with four great grandchildren, Lauryn, Lila, Levi, Nolan and baby girl due in March, a sister, Isabel Longloy of San Antonio, Texas and many special nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by her brother Thomas Morrissey of Santa Barbara, California and a sister Alice Cicia of Shelton, Connecticut.
A Funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday December 20th, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights Illinois, by Msgr. Jason Gray. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of Mass at the Church. Burial will be at 3:00 PM at Washington Glendale Cemetery in Washington, Illinois.
