Obituary for Mary Mitchell Phelan

PEORIA-Mary Mitchell Phelan, 81, of Surprise, AZ and formerly of Peoria, passed away at 8:35 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in Surprise, AZ. She was born on July 3, 1926 in Bradford, IL to James and Agnes Hardesty Mitchell. She married John R. “Bob” Phelan on August 20, 1946 in Bradford, IL. He survives. She is also survived by four sons, John (Dee) Phelan of Garner, NC, Edward (Paula) Phelan of Overland Park, KS, Michael (Bev) Phelan of Naperville, IL and Brian (Angela) Phelan of Ashburn, VA; two daughters, Molly (Ed) Black of Peoria and Regina (Ron) Wesley of Surprise, AZ; seven grandsons; seven granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; and five sisters, Anne Modlin of Deerfield, IL, Betty Campbell of Magnolia, IL, Kay Carroll of Morton, Rosie Schierer of Colona, IL and Gina Fatica of Tempe, AZ. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy, Class of 1944, in Nauvoo, IL, Mary worked as a draftsperson at Caterpillar’s East Peoria Plant. After leaving Caterpillar, she started a family and stayed home to raise her children. After her youngest child started school, Mary began working part-time at Peoria Flag and Decorating Co. Because of her creativity and talent, she took much joy in her work there. She became not just a long-term employee, but a life-long member of the Peoria Flag family. Mary was active in the Knights of Columbus #427 Spalding Council Ladies Auxiliary from the beginning. After serving as only the second president, she was presented with the group’s first Lady of the Year award. Along with these outside activities, she still found time to be a wonderful, devoted wife to Bob for almost 62 years and a loving mother to her six children. Mary was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Parish in Surprise, AZ and a former long-time member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Peoria, IL A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008 at St. Vincent de Paul Church with Rev. Jason Gray officiating. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with a Scripture Services conducted by the family at 5:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. A Memorial Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 17111 W. Bell Rd., Surprise, AZ 85379 with Rev. Hans Ruygt officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Knights of Columbus #427 Spalding Council, 7403 N. Radnor Rd., Peoria, IL 61615.
