Obituary for Mary M. Kelly

WEST PEORIA-Mary M. Kelly, 87, of West Peoria, passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Bickford House in Peoria. She was born on October 31, 1921 in Peoria to Patrick and Mary Ellen Sullivan McGrath. She married James L. Kelly on December 26, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Church in Peoria. He passed away on March 12, 1996 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by three sons, Michael (Myrna) Kelly of Palo Alto, CA, Dr. James (Chris) Kelly of South Bend, IN and Dick (Joan Ruder) Kelly of Peoria; two daughters, Maureen (Joe) Faney of Greendell, NJ and Kate (Steve) Shannon of Springfield, IL; seven grandchildren, Brian, Kevin, Elizabeth and Patrick Kelly, Meghan Faney, Anne McClaughry and Jackie White; one great-grandson, Jake McClaughry; and one brother, James (Pat) McGrath of Phoenix, AZ. Mary was a 1939 graduate of the Academy of Our Lady. She worked as a secretary at Caterpillar, Inc., during World War II and later worked for the City of Peoria Police Department, and for 23 years, she was Administrative Assistant to Peoria County States Attorney, retiring in 1988. Mary was a member of St. Patrick’s Church from 1946 through1954 and was a member of St. Mark’s Church from 1954 to the present, where she was active in school and church activities. In recent years, she volunteered at Bel-Wood Nursing Home and West Bluff Food Pantry. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2009 at St. Mark’s Church with Rev. Charles Klamut and Rev. Donald Henderson officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the rosary at 6:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to James L. and Mary M. Kelly Scholarship Fund at Peoria Notre Dame High School.
