Obituary for Mary Louise Merdian

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Mary Louise Merdian, 89, of High Point, N.C., formerly of Peoria, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Pennybyrn at Maryfield, High Point, N.C. Mary was born on December 9, 1924, in Peoria to Leo Kearney and Erma (Roth) Houlihan. She married John Gordon Merdian on October 1, 1949. He preceded her in death on June 28, 2012. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Reverend Father Robert Houlihan SJ and Bill Houlihan. She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Bob) DuCharme of Lexington, N.C., and Donna (Mike) Wood of High Point, N.C.; one son, Dave (Betty) Merdian of Troy, Mich.; six grandchildren, Kristin Hansen, Erica Roberts, Kyle Williams, Caitlin Merdian, Amanda Lord, and Megan Merdian; six great-grandchildren, Emily, Ellie, Matthew, Madeline, Kolbie, and Hunter; one sister, Sister Roberta (Phyllis) Houlihan CSJ of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Lois Merdian; and several nieces and nephews. Mary worked in personal and purchasing at J.D. Roszell Co. in Peoria for eight years. She retired in 1986 from Caterpillar in Mossville, where she worked for 27 years with her last 11 years as executive secretary to a vice-president. She was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church, its Ladies Guild, and Catholic Women’s League. At the time of her death, she was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, High Point, N.C. A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014, at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father David Richardson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to National Right to Life or a charity of the donor’s choice. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
