Obituary for Mary Lou Spitzer

PEORIA – Mary Lou Spitzer, 80, of Peoria, passed away at 10:10 p.m., Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Rosewood Care Center in Peoria. Mary Lou was born on January 19, 1933, in Peoria, to Charles and Caroline (Uphold) Thomas. She married Harold “Pete” Spitzer on February 27, 1954, in Peoria. He survives. She is also survived by one daughter, Christine (Roger) Roten of Peoria; two sons, Thomas (Bonnie) Spitzer of Bartonville and Joseph (Barbara) Spitzer of Chillicothe; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Mary Lou was a graduated high school at St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo. She later worked as the secretary at St. Thomas Parish in Peoria Heights for 25 years. In the 1960’s, Mary Lou and her sister, LaVerne, won the Peoria Journal Star Sisters Bowling Tournament She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the St. Vincent de Paul and St. Thomas Women’s Guilds and the cleaning crew at St. Vincent de Paul. She was also a past president of the Catholic Women’s League. Mary Lou received the Pere Marquette Award from the Diocese of Peoria in 1998 and the Angel of the Year Award from the Catholic Women’s League in May 2005. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 17, 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Fr. John Cyr and Fr. Thomas Taylor will concelebrate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2013, also at the church, with recitation of the Rosary at 6:45 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Thomas Parish or St. Vincent de Paul Parish. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
