Obituary for Mary L. Vetter

PEORIA – Mary L. Vetter, 72, of Peoria, passed away at 10:15 a.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at her residence. She courageously fought cancer for several years, until she died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. Mary was born on September 30, 1940, in Hammond, IN, to Carl P. and Vivian (Gordon) Stagg. She married Maynard E. Vetter on December 23, 1968. They enjoyed 40 years of marriage prior to Maynard’s death on April 19, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents and great-nephew, Christopher (Tofer) Fiddes. She is survived by her daughters, Laura (Robert) Watson of Chicago and Kara Marino of Washington, IL; her son, Scott Vetter of Washington, IL; her son-in-law, Andy Marino; three grandchildren, Abigail and Andrew Marino and Vivian Watson; two sisters, Phyllis (Bruce) Fiddes of Peoria and Karen (Joe) Winne of Washington; one brother, Gordon (Anne) Stagg of West Suffield, CN; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was an elementary teacher. She worked at Tyng School for 30 years, until her retirement in 2003. She was an avid golfer, belonging to several park district and cancer leagues. She was also a competitive bowler in several leagues in Peoria. Mary had a passion for casino play. After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren. Mary was a loyal Bradley and Illinois basketball fan. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. A memorial service will be at noon, Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Father Donald Henderson will officiate. Visitation will be from 10-noon prior to the service at the mortuary. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery in Kickapoo will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Jude.
