Obituary for Mary Jane Yard

PEORIA – Mary Jane Yard, 86, of Peoria, died at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.
Mary was born July 24, 1926, in Potomac, IL to Benjamin A. and Blanche M. (Golliday) Talbott. She married Leroy E. Yard on February 4, 1946 in Peoria.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, one sister, and her beloved daughter, Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Adams.
Among those surviving are 5 children, Larry (Marguerite) Yard of Port Charlotte, FL, Patricia (Pipper) Langenberg of Peoria, Colleen (Chuck) Bush of Eureka, John (Monica) Yard of Farmington and Rita (Tracy) Towns of Peoria. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Mary lost her own mother at 18 months. She spent over a year at the Judy School for Girls where she learned to cook, sew, crochet and play the piano. She had many fond memories of her time there.
In 1945, she began her training as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital, where she met her husband. Mary then became a full-time homemaker and spent the next 40 years as a Garfield Grade School PTA member and cafeteria worker. She cherished her time at Garfield and was referred to as "Grandma" by the children she served. Mary also worked as an Election Judge for many years.

Mary was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Peoria and later, Bradley Epworth Church in Peoria. She taught Sunday School for many years and her faith sustained her throughout her life.

She was a gifted poet and wrote hundreds of poems over her lifetime and was often asked to recite her poetry on special occasions or celebrations.
Mary was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend to all. She spent her life as a testament of faith, strength of character, selflessness and kindness.
Visitation will be on Monday, November 12, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. at Wright Salmon Mortuary in Peoria with the funeral immediately following officiated by Reverend C. Don Ferrill. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of cremains will be at a later date.
Mary requested a single spray of flowers that her children will provide. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the American Cancer Society.
