Obituary for Mary Helen Duggan

Peoria – Mary Helen Duggan, 93, of Peoria passed away at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at St. Francis Hospital after a brief hospitalization.

Mary was born on March 30, 1925, in Springfield, Illinois. She was married to Jack Duggan on November 2, 1946, in Springfield, Illinois. Mary and Jack were married for 67 years and were most proud of raising their five children. She is survived by four daughters, Colleen, Maureen, Kathleen, and Molly, six grandchildren, Miriam “Luz,” Gina, Nicholas, Shannon, Gabriella, Brendan, and one great-granddaughter, Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Duggan in 2013, her son, Patrick Duggan in 2006, her brother Robert Fleming, and her brother, Donald Fleming.

Before her marriage, Mary took great pride in her work as an executive secretary for the State of Illinois in Springfield. While raising her family, she volunteered as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Mary was known for extending kindnesses to friends and neighbors throughout her life and made her family home a welcome hub of activity. Friends enjoyed visiting with Mary throughout the years and sharing their fond memories of her warm hospitality as one constant in a changing world. Mary enjoyed taking in the colorful autumn beauty of Grand View Drive and sharing it with those she loved. Her compassion for animals was lifelong, and donations should be made to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Her family is aware that Mary would want to extend her appreciation to the nursing students who cared for her during the last years of her life and let them know how touched she was by their care. She was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, Aug 7, 2018, with the visitation at 10:30 a.m. and the funeral mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father David Richardson will officiate and burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois at 2:00 p.m. with a committal service next to her husband, Jack Duggan.

Memorials in Mary’s memory may be made to St. Philomena Catholic Church.
