Obituary for Mary Frances "Fran" McShane

Mary Frances “Fran” McShane passed away at Proctor Place in Peoria on Friday, November 13, 2020.

Fran was born on December 31, 1923 in Montese, Italy to the late Augusto and Theresa Baccolini Bernabei. When Fran was 7 years old, she emigrated to America with her mother and two older siblings settling in Dalzell, Illinois. Her father had emigrated earlier to work in the coal mines. He died within a year of their arrival, and her mother and the three children moved to Spring Valley.

After graduation from Hall High School, Fran attended OSF St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Peoria, and graduated in 1946.

She returned to Spring Valley to work at St. Margaret’s Hospital, and became reacquainted with her future husband, Jack McShane. They married in December 1946 and settled in Peoria where Jack graduated from Bradley University, and
began his career at Hiram Walker. They were blessed with a marriage of 67 years and truly were a perfect match.

Fran is survived by four children, Patty (John) Hession, Dr. Jerry (Kathy) McShane, Tim (Pattie) McShane, Terri (Jim) Powell, daughter-in-law, Marianne Suelter, 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her husband, their son, Michael, her sister, Anne Loebach, and brother, Bruno Bernabei.

Fran was involved in many outside activities but somehow managed to keep her priorities foremost which were family, the Catholic faith, and working part time for 38 years at OSF St. Francis in Labor and Delivery where she was present in delivering several of her grandchildren.

She was an active volunteer at St Philomena Church and school. When the family moved to Holy Family, Fran was active in Bible study, Mary Martha group, Holy Family Players, Holy Family Funsters, as well as community organizations

Fran had a great passion for learning. Enrolling in part time courses when ICC opened, attaining a BSN in Nursing from Bradley in 1974, and joining Learning in Retirement (OLLI) at its inception, and continuing courses until her late 80s.

In her later years, Fran volunteered at Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen (now Sophia’s), and as a nurse at Heartland Clinic. She belonged to several bridge clubs and golf leagues, excelling at both.

We all have memories of holidays and gatherings at the McShane family home. The highlight was her serving her homemade raviolas. She was proud of her Italian heritage and shared stories of her early life in Montese. Fran returned to Italy and the little town in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains several times.

Fran was the Matriarch of the family, the center of life for all of us. We will miss her dearly. We could count on her to be there for us, sharing our joys and disappointments. We will always remember her beautiful smile and contagious laugh.

We are grateful to the Healthcare Unit staff at Proctor Place who gave wonderful and compassionate care to Fran especially during the most difficult times since March.

There will be a private family funeral mass at Holy Family Church with Father Stephen Willard officiating followed by Entombment at Resurrection Cemetery and Mausoleum on Saturday, November 21, 2020.

A celebration of life gathering will be scheduled at a later date.

Memorials in Fran’s memory may be made to Holy Family Church.
