Obituary for Mary Ellen Kennedy
Peoria- Mary Ellen Kennedy, age 89, of Peoria, passed away at 7:05 AM on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at her residence surrounded by her family.
Born January 29, 1928 in Sheffield, IL she was a daughter to Paul J. and Mary E. (Lappin) McMahon. On April 11, 1953 she married Edward Kennedy in Sheffield, IL. He preceded her in death on December 29, 2002. Mary graduated from St. Francis College of Nursing and worked for OSF St. Francis Medical Center for 26 years until her retirement in January of 1993. She was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church and was actively involved in the Catholic Women’s League and was a member of Chapter R,PEO of Peoria. She was thought of as a mother and grandmother to many and was the sweetest woman anyone ever met. She loved all children and advocated for their care and protection. She reveled in her children and was proud of all her grandchildren. Mary was deeply loved, and will truly be missed, and always remembered.
Survivors include five children: Katherine Kennedy of Peoria, Patrick (Diana) Kennedy of Peoria, IL, Mary Beth (Tony) Cabrera Healdsburg, CA, Martin Kennedy of Peoria, IL, and Kevin (Valerie) Kennedy of Germantown Hills, IL; eight grandchildren: Michael, Maggie, Maureen, Rebecca, Bryan, Joseph, Luke, and Kathleen; three great-grandchildren: Hailee, Connor, and Elizabeth; as well as one sister-in-law Loraine McMahon and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward, one granddaughter Genevieve, and one brother Martin McMahon.
The family would like to thank the staff of OSF Hospice and Comfort Keepers for their kindness and loving care.
Cremation rights have been accorded. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 from 9:00 AM till time of memorial mass at 10:00 AM at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father David Richardson will officiate and burial will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum.
Memorials in Mary’s memory may be made to the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois or St. Philomena Catholic Church.
