Obituary for Mary Ellen Clancy
Mary Ellen Clancy, of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, surrounded by her family.Â
Mary Ellen was born in Chicago on August 17, 1949 to Stephen and Mary Foran. She is preceded in death by her husband, Craig, and later, her husband, Geza Wagner, her brother, Stephen Foran, her sister Celine Marshall, and her nephews, John and Michael Dolenak.Â
Mary Ellen is survived by her sister, Irene (James) Kijanowski, nieces and nephews, Denise (Andrea) Lee, Joyce (Vincent) Shumate, Kim Kijanowski, David (Beth) Kijanowski, Megan Foran, Beth (Brad) Mueller, as well as several great-nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Â
Prior to moving to Peoria, Mary Ellen resided in Chicago, where she earned an English degree from Rosary College and worked for many years at Illinois Bell Telephone Company, working her way up from operator to management. Â
After retiring, Mary Ellen served as long time Opera Illinois League president, devoting countless hours to promoting and preserving professional opera, and music in general, throughout central Illinois. She was particularly passionate about bringing opera into the lives of younger generations. Mary Ellen was a dedicated volunteer for the Look It’s My Book organization, helping to put books in the hands of Peoria schoolchildren and sharing her love of reading with them. Mary Ellen will be greatly missed and will always be remembered for her kindness, compassion, generosity and unwavering love and support of her family and friends. Â
We will celebrate her life on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Philomena’s Church. Special musicians will play from 10:30 am until the time of Mass. Fr. David Richardson will officiate. Cremation Rites have been accorded. Burial of Ashes will take place at a later date at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Chicago, IL.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Opera Illinois League, Look It’s My Book, or the American Cancer Society are appreciated.Â
