Obituary for Mary C. Kelly

Peoria- Mary C. Kelly, age 86, of Peoria, formerly of New Mexico, passed away at 12:13 PM, Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Lutheran Hillside Village, surrounded by her family.

Born January 6, 1932 in Peoria, she was a daughter of Raymond W. and Frances M. (Bulger) Schaab. On June 12, 1954, she married the love of her life, James F. Kelly at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Peoria. He preceded her in death on November 4, 2017.

Mary graduated from Manual High School in 1950 and St. Francis School of Nursing in 1953. She worked nearly 50 years as a registered nurse, many years in Pediatrics at OSF St. Francis Hospital and the UNM Hospital in Albuquerque. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from St. Joseph’s College in Maine in 1988.

Mary and Jim provided a loving home. The family often expanded to include the children’s friends, who never went away hungry. “Mrs. Kell” was known for her hospitality. She often hosted family dinners and became the keeper of traditional dishes and desserts-most notably, cinnamon stars and her brother’s favorite “Ooctus.”

Mary spent many hours supporting her children and later her grandchildren by attending numerous sporting, band, orchestra concerts and dance recitals. She instilled a passionate love of reading in her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include; six children: Lynn (John) Ringham of Peoria, Mark (Susie) Kelly of Dunlap, Kate Young of Ann Arbor, MI, Maureen (John) Addis of Edelstein, IL, Maria Castle of Peoria, and Fran Kelly of Rio Rancho, NM; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; one sister Kitty (Thomas) Crisham of Wilmette; three brothers, Rev. R. Michael Schaab of Putnam, Tony Schaab of South Carolina, and Dave Schaab of Peoria, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Joseph Schaab.

Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, February 12, 2018 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bartonville, with a one hour prior visitation. Fr. Michael Schaab will officiate. Burial of cremains will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria.

A Celebration of Life will follow after graveside services at the Lariat Club, 2232 W. Glen Ave., Peoria.

Memorials in Mary’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Lutheran Hillside Village, Bethel Place and Unity Point Hospice for the for their excellent care of Mary in the last several months.
