Obituary for Mary Ellen Powell
Peoria- Mary Ellen Powell, age 84, passed away 6:54 PM, Saturday, July 22, 2017, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
Mary was born August 1, 1932 in Peoria, a daughter of James G. and Vivian M. (Manning) Moran. She married James D. Powell, September 9, 1950 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Peoria. He preceded her in death on April 8, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Albert Stambaugh, brother, James C. Moran, sister, Patricia Warner, two great-grandchildren, one nephew and one niece.
Mary is survived by their six children; Jane A. (Gary Cage) Berfield of Peoria, Patricia E. (Gary) Craig of Branson, MO., Deirdre J. (Jeff) Kloth of Cleveland, OH., Tina L. (Tim) Hennessey of Peoria, James J. (Terese) Powell of Peyton, CO., William “Billy” T. Powell of Peoria, and two granddaughters, whom she helped raise; Meridith J. Pople of Peoria Heights and Jamie M. (Tyler) Kissell of Bradenton, FL, 15 other grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, with one expected in November. She was a caring, loving mother, aunt, and grandmother, who will be truly missed.
Mary graduated in 1950 from Academy of Our Lady and attended luncheons with her high school friends for many years. She was the treasurer for the Bergan Boosters and a real estate broker for over 40 years. She worked side by side with her husband at Powell Paint and Wallpaper Co., and later worked at Born Paint Co. Mary was a Girl Scout Leader and Den Mother for local Cub Scout Troops. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, July 27, 2017 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with a one hour prior visitation. Fr. Thomas Taylor will officiate and entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria.
