Obituary for Martin Lawless

PEORIA-J. Martin Lawless, 81 of Peoria, died at 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Born on February 9, 1926 in Peoria to Thomas M. and Irma Bibo Lawless. He married Carol Sluser on July 6, 1963 in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are two children, Robert M. (Patricia) Lawless of Champaign and Suzanne (Peter) Gill of Princeville; two brothers, Dr. David (Ellen) Lawless of Paradise Valley, Arizona and Dr. Philip (Nancy) Lawless of Peoria; five grandchildren, Thomas, Rebecca and Rachel Lawless, and Kelly and Carrie Gill. He was preceded in death by his parents. Martin was a graduate of St. Bernard’s Grade School, Peoria High School and received undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois. He was a partner in the law firm of Vonachen, Lawless, Trager & Slevin. He practiced law for 57 years. He was past president of the Peoria County Bar Association. A member of the Illinois State Bar Association and past chairman of its committee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law, past chairman and commissioner of the City of Peoria Board of Election Commissioners, a member of the American Legion, St. Patrick Society and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, past president of the former Willow Knolls Country Club and a member of Mt. Hawley Country Club. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944-1945. Martin was a avid golfer and founding member of the Saturday A.M. Golf League. Member of the Ad Hoc Golf Committee for the Peoria Park District. He also was a member of St. Philomena Church, it’s men’s Club and a former trustee. Member of the Knights of Columbus #427 Third Degree Spalding Council and #206 Fourth Degree Spalding Assembly. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Philomena Church with Rev. Donald Henderson officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary and 30 minutes before the mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
