Obituary for Martin Dolan

PEORIA - Martin Dolan, 89, of Peoria passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at Washington Christian Village.

He was born on December 24, 1927 in Chicago, IL to Frank and Clarissa (Van Os). Martin married Joan Karpis on May 23, 1953, at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Chicago, IL. She preceded him in death on January 7, 1979. He then married Catherine Williams on October 5, 1984, at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Peoria, IL. She preceded him in death on August 20, 2006.

Marty worked as a pie route salesman in Chicago prior to moving his family to Peoria, where he accepted his sales position with Lever Brothers. He retired after 34 years with the company in 1991.

Martin was always friendly and never knew a stranger. He made friends everywhere he went. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose most important thing in life was his family. Martin enjoyed fishing, poker, and golfing. He enjoyed making homemade beer and traveling whenever possible. He loved watching the Chicago Cubs and Bears and was thrilled to witness the Cubs win the World Series last year.

Martin was a member of the Elks Club Lodge #20, Usher at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, American Legion Post II, Men’s Club at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, and cherished the times he spent with the ROMEO’s (retired old men eating out.)

Martin is survived by five children, Lynne (James) Copes of Germantown Hills, Martin (Shelby) Dolan of Katy, TX, Laureen (Jon) Wiegand of Charlotte, NC, Michael Dolan of Peachtree City, GA, and Deanne (Russ) Woods of Sycamore, IL; two stepchildren, Maureen (Todd) Giardina of Chillicothe, IL and Mary (Jack) Bader of Arlington, TN; seven grandchildren, Dr. Ashley (Phillip) Smith, Courtney Woods, Samantha (Ben) Kjell, Jessica Dolan, Eric Wiegand, Martin Dolan, and Benjamin Woods; four stepgrandchildren; Nichole (Jim) Mitchell, Holly Giardina, Abigail Bader, and Brandon Bader; three great-grandchildren, Preston Kjell, Isabella Kjell, and Greyson Kjell; one brother-in-law, Joseph Cosgrove of Chicago, IL. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Delores Pryor Coryell and Patricia Cosgrove.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 7, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 8, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church with a visitation one-hour prior. Father James Pallardy will officiate. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
