Obituary for Martha E. "Mari" McGinnis

Peoria- Martha E. (Mari) McGinnis, age 80, of Peoria, passed away at 10:35 AM on Monday, November 19, 2018 at Lutheran Hillside Village surrounded by her family.

Born November 6, 1938 in Washington, she was a daughter to Benjamin and Sanora (Schmidt) Pfeffinger. On October 24, 1958, she married C. Dirk McGinnis at First Federated Church in Peoria. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Bradley University and worked for District 150. She was an avid member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, PEO, Peoria Quilt Club and Ivy Club.

Mari was an avid sewer, reader, and amazing cook. For many years she made costumes for Corn Stock Theatre. Mari loved the warm weather especially the British and United States Virgin Islands. She loved sailing and she and her husband and family chartered sailboats for nearly 30 years all over the Caribbean on holidays. During her retirement she and Dirk moved to a sailboat for nine years beginning by sailing for 31 days down the Illinois River to the Mississippi River, up the Ohio River, through KY Lake, down the Tom Bigby Canal, to Mobile, AL, along the Intercoastal Waterways ending in Tarpon Springs, FL. Mari was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Dirk of Peoria; four children: Roz (Ron) Helms of Peoria, Arran McGinnis of St. Thomas, USVI, Polly (Mike) McNally of Metamora and Meghan (Arnel) Tejero of Peoria; eight grandchildren: Quintuplets; Shannon, Bevin, Samantha, Benjamin Helms, Meredith (Justin) Rager, Keegan and Colleen McNally and Lilianna Tejero; one sister Patricia Liston of Florida, and one sister-in-law, Jackie Kinsinger of Washington, IL.

Mari was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Lyle and Donald Pfeffinger.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018, from 2:00 PM until time of Celebration of Life service at 3:00 PM at Lutheran Hillside Village. Pastor Pat Monroe will officiate.
