Obituary for Marjorie Ann Klise

PEORIA – Marjorie Ann (Costello) Klise, 84, of Peoria passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 24, 2016, at her home.

Marjorie was born on Dec. 24, 1931, in Peoria to the late Dallas Monroe and Margaret (Feeney) Costello. She married Thomas Klise on Aug. 24, 1957, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1978.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Costello McQuillen and Gertrude Holly; and a son, David Klise.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Michael von Zerneck) Klise of Peoria, Margaret Klise of Mystic, Conn., Sarah Klise of Berkeley, Calif., Kate Klise of Norwood, Mo., Julia (Joe Augustine) Klise of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James (Michael Kuras) Klise of Chicago; eight grandchildren, Peter, Sebastian, Lorenzo, Eliza, Flora, Milo, Lionel, and Desmond; a sister, Mariclare Costello Arbus of Los Angeles, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Marjorie attended St. Mark School and was a member of the Academy of Our Lady class of 1949. She graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, with a degree in theater and education. She taught at Von Steuben School before devoting herself to raising her family. She later served as president of the Thomas S. Klise Company, in addition to being involved in countless neighborhood, civic, cultural, and social justice efforts.

She felt passionately about historic preservation, neighborhood gatherings, liberation theology, progressive politics, and the annual Moss-Bradley sale. She never tired of traveling and trying new things but found life’s greatest adventures right on Moss Avenue where she lived for 70 years.

Stephen Cope wrote, “Each of us feels some aspect of the world’s suffering acutely. And we must pay attention. We must act. This little corner of the world is ours to transform. This little corner of the world is ours to save.” She lived by these words; and we were made precious by her love.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016, at St. Mark Catholic Church, where she was a parishioner for 84 years. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday April 29, 2016, also at the church. An additional visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church.
Burial will be St. Mary’s Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Moss-Bradley Residential Association/Marjorie Costello Klise Fund.
