Obituary for Marilyn Jean (Haas) Caughey

Marilyn Jean (Haas) Caughey, of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Marilyn was born July 19, 1949 in Bloomington, IL., a daughter of Fabian and Catherine (Sweeney) Haas. She married Robert Caughey on April 1, 1972 in El Paso, IL. He survives.

She is also survived by three sons; Ben of Indianapolis, IN., Paul (Sumiaya) of Lombard, IL., and Dan (Robin Kuprewicz) of Alexandria, VA., and grandchildren; Addison and Grant of Indianapolis, IN., and Jonah and Claire of Lombard, IL. She is also survived by three sisters; Mary Haas Anderson, Margaret Haas Minnis and Helen Haas, and two brothers; Joe Haas, Leo Haas and fourteen nephews and nieces.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dennis Haas.

Marilyn graduated from Marycrest College in Davenport, IA., with a BA in secondary education and from Illinois State University with a MA in curriculum and instruction. She taught for 25 years in Peoria at St. Philomena Grade School, White Middle School and Rolling Acres Middle school, until her retirement in 2005. She was also a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Family was most important to Marilyn, and she enjoyed watching her sons grow to adulthood and have families. She also cherished her time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling during her retirement years, especially her trip last summer to France. She was an avid reader and liked to garden. She will be remembered for her kindness and quick wit.

The family wants to thank everyone who cared for Marilyn at Illinois CancerCare-Peoria, Unity Point Proctor, Methodist Hospitals and the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.

Cremation Rites have been accorded.

Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church, 116 NE Perry Ave., in downtown Peoria, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, July 6, 2018. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 7, 2018 also at First United Methodist Church, with a further visitation half hour prior. Dr. Timothy Ozment will officiate. A private family burial of ashes will follow at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Marilyn’s memory may be made to Illinois CancerCare-Peoria or to the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.
