Obituary for Marie T. Farris

PEORIA - Marie T. Farris, 81, of Peoria passed away at 7:23 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center Emergency Room. Marie was born Mar. 23, 1933, to the late Charles and Anna (Alwan) Farris. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Anthony; one sister, Esther; and one brother- in- law, Stephen Abraham II. Surviving are one brother, Maurice (Patricia) Farris of Morton Ill.; one sister, Laurice Abraham of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Geraldine Farris of Peoria; four nephews, Stephen Abraham III, John Abraham, Christopher Farris, and Shane Dixon; four nieces, Debbie Farris, Tina Wilson, Jeanine Messer, and Linda Raine. Also surviving are several great-nephews and nieces. Marie was a graduate of St. Patrick’s School in Peoria and was a member of Academy of Our Lady’s class of 1951. She worked for 13 years at Couri’s Food Town, at a family grocery store, and for the Peoria Election Commission. Marie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Peoria since 1976, serving as a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Itoo Society, Altar Rosary Society, and the Catholic Women’s League. Marie had no children of her own but considered her nephews and nieces as her children. She took care of her mother for many years and then devoted her life to helping others. As a Eucharistic minister, she took communion to shut-ins and to residents at nursing homes. She also helped prepare and deliver food baskets during the Christmas season. Marie never met a stranger and always had a smile and word of encouragement for all she met. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Franciscan Fathers will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Peoria. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
