Obituary for Marianne "Mert" Hunt

Marianne “Mert” T. Hunt, 78, of Peoria, died peacefully on September 22, 2022 at the R.L. Owens Hospice Home.

Marianne was born on November 2, 1943 in Peoria, IL to Robert L. and Margaret M. Poehls. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant sibling “Baby Joe”.

Marianne is survived by her loving husband, Keats E. Hunt, of Peoria, daughter Rebekah E. Koch (Matt) of College Grove, TN and their children Elizabeth (15), William (12), Caroline (10), and Alexander (7); Siblings Michael R. Poehls (Charlene) of Peoria, Kathleen A. Higginson (Marvin) of Springfield, IL, John P. Poehls (Daneilla) of Germany, and Peggy J. Seay (David) of Peoria; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews, and cousins.

Growing up on the East Bluff, Marianne attended St. Bernard’s Catholic School and the Academy of Our Lady High School (1961). She attended Cosmetology school, and for over 60 years hair styling was her passion. Faith, family, and friends were the most important things in Marianne’s life. She and Keats have been active parishioners at Holy Family Catholic Church for decades. With her bright, outgoing personality, she loved to be surrounded by people, whether hosting large family gatherings, dinner with friends, or charity events, but her biggest joy was being with her grandkids whom she loved dearly.

She had an adventurous spirit, enjoying the lake cabin in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, winter on South Padre Island, European travel, road trips, and cruise ships. She loved to shop, especially if it was to spoil someone else with gifts. Marianne kept Hallmark in business, sending cards to everyone for every occasion. She was an exercise enthusiast and enjoyed her early morning workouts at Curves. Marianne was proud of her Irish Catholic heritage and was active in LAOH and her AOL Class of 1961 group. As an animal lover, she always had a cat or dog by her side.

The visitation will be held at Wright and Salmon Mortuary in Peoria, IL on Monday, September 26th, 4-6:30pm. On September 27th, a visitation will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church from 9:30-10:30am, with the funeral mass following at 10:30am. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria following the funeral.

Memorials can be made to Holy Family Catholic School, St. Jude’s Hospital Midwest Affiliate, or Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter (PAWS).
